Problems

We’ve all got ’em.
I don’t think I’ve ever had a single problem-free day in my life.
Not one.
Certainly not today.
But I’ve found this: the quickest way through my own mess is to show up for someone else.
The tricky part is, we usually don’t know when someone’s going through it.
Most people keep their struggles tucked away and broadcast their highlight reel instead.
I get it.
I do the same thing. Usually.
But knowing myself, and knowing that something is constantly weighing on me in some way, I just assume the same is true for everyone else.
Maybe it’s something small.
Maybe it’s life-altering.
But chances are, they’re carrying more than they’re sharing.
So, when someone pops into my mind, I don’t ignore it.
I may call them, but I usually send a text.
It might say:
“Thinking about you. Hope all is well.”
“Hey, punk. Hope you’re doing great.”
“Love you.”
“You just came to mind, so I wanted to say hello.”
“I hope you have an awesome day!”
Nothing fancy.
Just a tap on the heart.
A reminder.
A little bit of light.
I figure if God nudged their name into my head, the least I can do is respond.
And you know what?
I love it when it happens to me, too.
When someone checks in out of the blue, it feels holy.
Like a hand on your back when you thought you were alone.
And I’ll take that.
On the hardest days and even on the good ones.
